Injustice: Gods Among Us - Year Five #12 - A Review

The bizarre clone of Superman has finally found the real deal. And the timing couldn't be better for Solomon Grundy. Now, a three-way-fight for dominance is about to erupt with dozen of civilians caught in the middle!


The better portion of this issue is taken up by a massive fight scene. And it's a darn good fight scene, as far as these things go, with Iban Coello and J. Nanjan blocking and rendering the whole affair beautifully. Yet Brian Buccellato's script doesn't let the action dominate the story. There's also a number of small character moments that show that as far gone as Superman is now, his first priority is still protecting the innocent.

Katar Hol does not wish to get involved in Superman's battle for Earth. His wife, Shiera, has other ideas. They shall settle their conflict in the manner in which all Thanagarians settle disagreement - with bloody air-borne mace battles!


There's not a lot of plot to this week's Injustice: Gods Among Us but there doesn't need to be. Doubtlessly continuity buffs will be pleased to finally know which version of Hawkman and Hawkwoman we have in this reality and to know why Hawkman hasn't shown up in the story until now. The rest of us will enjoy an action-packed issue filled with one of the best battle sequences in recent memory.


All of this is ably illustrated by Iban Coello.  Whatever else you can say about Coello as an artist, he draws a damn good fight scene.  The battle here is a vivd one, with blood flying everywhere, and Coello captures the intensity and passion of The Hawks conflict perfectly.

The sudden escape of every captive super-villain on Earth has led to wide-spread chaos and new opportunities for Batman's Resistance. So as Catwoman and Batman discuss the organization of their new army in a Parisian cafe, Superman faces Doomsday. At the same time, a desperate Hal Jordan calls for back-up in fighting an out-of-control Parasite and only Cyborg is free to help him.


As I noted in my review of the first issue of this series on Kabooooom.com, it seemed certain that this issue would make up for the lack of action in Part One. My prediction proved accurate. Apart from the opening scene with Batman and Catwoman, this issue is all action. And it is great, well-paced action with an honestly surprising final page. Well done, Brian Buccellato!

This is Iban Coello's first issue on Injustice and it's a promising start. Coello's character designs are wonderful, with clear pencils and think inks that enhance the artwork perfectly. The colors by J. Nanjan are up to the usual high level of quality, with the final artwork looking amazing.
