Red Sonja #70 - A Review

To: Dynamite Entertainment
From: Matt Morrison

Did I do something to offend you all? I know that my reviews of your books lately have not always been complementary but I'd like to think that I have been a fair and honest critic, handing out praise when I thought it appropriate.  And yet, I can only conclude that I must have done something to upset somebody... because that is the only logical reason I can think of as to why you would put Marcio Abreu back on the main Red Sonja title.

As I'm sure you're aware, I did write a rather negative review of Red Sonja #67 a few months ago with my sole objection being that Marcio Abreu's artwork was, to put it politely, sub-par.  It was bad enough that he indulged in the worst kind of  cheap fan-service and filled the book with numerous up-skirt shots of our heroine.  It was even worse that Sonja magically donned white school-girl panties to facilitate said up-skirt shots while still allowing this book to maintain a T+ rating.  But the fact that the man has no sense of scale or proportion made reading the issues he illustrated simply intolerable.

Red Sonja #70 is filled with more of the same incompetent artwork.  The one saving grace of the artwork this time is that there are no cases of Sonja suddenly having a bad case of man-face.  But the gratuitous panty shots remain.  And worse, there are many scenes where Sonja does not appear to have a neck!

It takes a lot for me to be unable to read a book when I enjoy the story, no matter how poor the artwork is.  Eric Trautmann's writing continues to be the best on any Red Sonja title being published today and his writing here proves a satisfying conclusion to his current epic.  But the artwork.... dear gods, the artwork!

Please.  Bring back
