What Is In A Name?

Why? Because it's the 21st Century. And it's about damn time that in one of these books depicting a married superhero couple that the woman's name be allowed to go first. It's just that simple.

I want to send a message. A message that this is not going to be Hawkman... with Hawkgirl. A message that this is not going to be Black Panther... with Storm. A message that this is not even going to be The Vision and Scarlet Witch mini-series.

Aside from that, I have five very practical reasons why the book should be restarted as Black Canary/Green Arrow and with a new #1 issue.

1. Less chance of book being confused with/lost among Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps.

2. The title change allows me to further distance the new series from the old series.

3. Because based on the drawing power between the two headliners relative to their prominence in recent years, Dinah is the bigger draw. She's had more exposure in JLA, JSA and Birds of Prey than Ollie has in... uh, his book and the occasional JLA special and Green Lantern guest shot.

4. Because it may finally force DC Comics to update the message board names relating to these characters after two years. Seriously! How long would it take to change it from Green Arrow to Green Arrow/Black Canary?

5. It’s more alphabetically sound. BC before GA.

Also, I have an idea for an Silver Age style alternate cover for the first issue that involves Ollie bowing dramatically as if holding a door open and gesturing above at the Title saying “Ladies first.” to an eye-rolling, but still smiling, Dinah.

I’m thinking Adam Hughes or Kevin Maguire for that job.

  1. Thumbs up so far. Especially the cover.

  2. I thought you meant the intro art at the top of this page for a moment. I did choose that particular panel because I thought it was symbolic. Dinah leading the charge (as she does) equals Dinah leading the title.
But yeah... thank Roy from B&B for suggest Maguire to me. I was all about Hughes after this one below, but I think Maguire would be good too.

  3. I'm still waiting for this Green Canary/Black Arrow you've been telling me so much about. ;)

  4. Not a bad change, and sound reasoning. It worked for Lois and Clark (although Dean Cain was still credited first in the intro).

  5. You know, I totally forgot about Lois and Clark.
Although I'm pretty sure Lois coming first in the title in that case was less about making a feminist statement or even a chivalric one and more about making a bad American history pun. (Lewis and Clark?)
Hell, come to think of it Superman's name came first in Lois Lane's own book! (Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane?!)

  6. Green Arrow has gotten a lot of exposure from Smallville though. The better part of 2 seasons where he was being more awesome than Clark. Hell, the Smallville GA is the only Ollie I give a poop about. And he needs his own show.

  7. Good point. The "Lewis and Clark" thing gave more of a ring to it.

  8. See, I don't watch Smallville. Most of the comic fans I know don't watch Smallville. And the minute I heard that Green Arrow was being used because they couldn't get the rights to use Batman like they wanted, I lost pretty much all interest in seeing it.
And if half of what I've heard about their revamp of Dinah is true, I really don't want to see it.

  9. No, it isn't Rip Hunter. Ollie's never had any past interaction with him that I'm aware of.
Besides, given what you've read of this so far, do you really expect me to do something THAT obvious? Especially after having made such a big deal about how Per Degaton went through this much trouble this time specifically to keep Hunter (and people like him) off the scent?

  10. I'm still waiting for you to dissolve the marriage, have BC kick GA's ass for kidnapping her child, and then having the book launched as just Black Canary.

  11. Sorry. Not going to happen.
And you really aren't going to like entry #5.

  12. The more alphabetically sound one?
And yeah, BC's look in Smallville was HORRENDOUS. She has a mask made of make-up, and, IIRC, 4 inch high heels. Plus, she looks like had her hair done up by an 80s pop rock washout.
Not that I hate 80s pop rock hairstyles (I love them) but it was just sooo stupid.
Such an easy costume to do, and they couldn't get it.

  13. Nononononononooooooooo. #5 in the series of these posts.
I'd suggest reading #2, #3 and #4 first, though. Points #2-5 describe my opening story arc and how I go about setting the stage for fixing years of badly garbled Green Arrow continuity and characterization.
And without spoiling #5 too heavily here, I doubt anyone who absolutely hates Oliver Queen and refuses to believe the character has been as badly abused the last few years as Dinah has been in the pages of Green Arrow/Black Canary will be at all happy with #5.
I also doubt anyone will believe me when I say that I plan to address their main grievance because it bugs the hell out of me too.

I was actually referring to the fact that I heard that her back story and personality had been changed so that she was basically Ann Coulter with karate skills so as to do an 'opposites attract' romance with Green Arrow. Wasn't Dinah Lance in that some kind of conservative pundit or reporter or some such?

  14. (sarcasm on)
    Don't be ridiculous!
Mephisto is a Marvel character. It's Neron who shows up and offers to cure Mia!
    (sarcasm off)
Seriously - no deals with devils, literal or otherwise, in this book.

  15. Yeah, I know. And that bugs the hell out of me too - how someone who was so high-profile a year ago can just go POOF like that.
