The Flash Episode Guide: Season 5, Episode 20 - Gone Rogue

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

XS is back in 2019 and she's gone bad, joining forces with the Weather Witch, Bug-Eyed Bandit and Ragdoll to form a new Rogues' Gallery. As Barry continues to cope with the fallout of his abandoning his daughter, Cisco makes a bold decision regarding his girlfriend.

Influences

Gail Simone's Secret Six (gang of mostly female villains, character of Rag Doll)

Goofs

Weather Witch is written with a completely different personality than she displayed in her last appearance. Before she was honestly remorseful for her crimes and reluctantly press-ganged into joining with Silver Ghost. This episode has her acting like an unrepentant villain who can't wait to double-cross the hero or kill people.

How are Rag Doll's powers supposed to function once he is inside The Forge? It's almost like the writers didn't know that the Arrowverse version of Rag Doll is a metahuman rather than a man whose body was surgically enhanced, as in the Secret Six comics.

Not that Barry and Iris have been consistently intelligent when it comes to Nora but their obliviousness hits new heights in this episode, where the two wonder why the daughter Barry literally abandoned in the future doesn't trust them anymore and wouldn't come to them for help in planning a robbery. They also repeat the same argument from last week regarding Barry being unwilling to compromise or consider that he might be wrong when it comes to Thawne's motivations.

Performances

Jessica Kennedy Parker does an amazing job selling some hokey dialogue.

One of the few bits of comedy in this episode that works without reservation is Grant Gustin's portrayal of Sherloque trying to sound like Barry Allen in full hero mode as The Flash.

Flash Facts

The architecture firm XS scopes out in the first scene of the show is G. Simone & Associates. This is a nod to Gail Simone - creator of the modern day version of Ragdoll and writer on Secret Six - a series which focused on a team of villains similar to the Rogues.

The plot of the episode centers around XS trying to steal a special "mirror gun" from McCulloch Technologies. In the modern day Flash comics, Evan McCulloch was the second super-criminal to use the name Mirror Master and use a variety of mirror-based gadgets to fight The Flash.

STAR Labs new satellites are named Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda after the main character of Sex in the City.

G. Simone & Associates is said to be on 34th and Williamson street. This is a nod to Joshua Williamson - the writer on The Flash's bi-monthly comic book when this episode aired.

The fake ID Nora makes for herself identifies her as Lt. Jenni Ognats.  In the comics, Jenni Ognats was the real name of the Legion of Super-Heroes member XS.

When escaping from his bonds, Sherloque says that he was trained in the art of escape by Thaddeus Brown of Earth-51. In the comics, Thaddeus Brown was the name of the first escape artist to use the name Mister Miracle. He trained both Scott Free and Shilo Norman, who both took up his name to continue his act and become costumed crime-fighters.

Technobabble

Gideon tells XS the chances of her breaking into McCulloch technologies on her own, successfully, are 3 million to 1.

Barry sets up tachyon scanners at half mile intervals across Central City in a bid to detect XS.

Caitlin programs STAR Labs seismometer to search for sonic booms in the hundred MHz range.

Barry notes that the hard drives in G. Simone & Associate's server room were fried from the inside, as if caught in a massive power surge.

A typical metal-oxide varistor protects against electrical charges up to one thousand joules.

A lighting bolt contains one billion joules.

Cisco detects a ton of background particle radiation at G. Simone & Associates and determines they are all Negative Tachyons.

Until now, Team Flash thought Negative Tachyons couldn't generate electricity. However, Cisco theorizes that instead of just offsetting Positive Tachyons, Negative Tachyons actually siphon energy from them, stealing power from the Speed Force like a parasite.

Intravenous electrolytes are used to treat coma patients.

The Forge is secured by a Montgomery 4000, 30-ton vault door. Once locked, it can only be opened from the inside.

The "mirror gun" Nora broke into McCulloch technologies to retrieve was made from the solar reflector panels of the original STAR Labs satellite. It has a prismatic battery supercharging its reflector panels. She says it is capable of atomizing anything and it is the only thing that Thawne knows of that might destroy Cicada's dagger.

Caitlin explains that the original metahuman cures Cisco developed hadn't been properly attuned to safely remove a metahuman's powers without killing them. Used in conjunction with the cryo-atomizer, they could kill anyone with a metagene in an incredibly painful manner.

Dialogue Triumphs

Rag Doll: (regarding crawling through a pipe into The Forge) This will be my aria.

Dialogue Disasters

Most of the episode, in all honesty. But a special shout-out for Caitlin's "Gross!" reaction to Ralph thinking she was flirting with him after talking about what a kind, compassionate man he is. You'd think she'd show a little more compassion after Ralph tried letting her down easy thinking she was trying to hint that she fancied him.

Continuity

XS breaks into the G. Simone architecture firm to find blue-prints for McCulloch Technologies.

Cisco programs the STAR Labs satellites to scan for XS' yellow-purple lightning signature.

Cisco says he is the Samantha of the STAR Labs team. Iris says he is the Miranda, in reference to the heroes of Sex in the City and a popular on-line personality test based on it.

Sherloque and Ralph have no leads on where the future Cicada has hidden her younger self or why she stole the Cryo-Atomizer.

Barry offers to let Caitlin take some time off to mourn her father but she says she'd rather keep working.

Ralph offers to help Caitlin with tracking down the Atomizer.

Barry is called out to a crime scene at G. Simone & Associates.

Caitlin and Ralph head to a her father's old lab in the Arctic after an alarm is tripped.

Sherloque does not understand emoji speech.

Cisco completes the program in The Book of Love, which Ralph gave him in 514. He gives the book to Sherloque.

Iris discovers that G. Simone & Associates spent most of the last year working for an anonymous client.

Barry figures out that Thawne taught Nora how to use Negative Tachyons to hide her movement.

Joslyn Jackam, The Weather Witch, was last seen in 510.

Brie Larvan, The Bug-Eyed Bandit, was last seen in A417.

Bug-Eyed Bandit gets angry when that name is applied to her and says it is "their name."

Bug-Eyed Bandit says she heard Weather Witch and Silver Ghost were in Bolivia.

Bug-Eyed-Bandit says she was approached by Silver Ghost about joining her team.

Ragdoll was last seen in 505. He apparently escaped from Iron Heights Prison, stuffed into a small crate.

XS refers to the events of 510 and how Weather Witch seemed to save her life because she didn't want to kill someone.

XS says that she wants to run a heist on McCulloch Technologies - the largest military-grade weapons manufacturer in the world.

McCullouch Technologies tests all their weapons in a facility known as The Forge, which has a metahuman power dampener more powerful than those employed by ARGUS. This is why XS needs Bug-Eyed Bandit and Weather Witch, as their powers are tech-based.

XS says that the weapons in The Forge could easily sell for $1 million each.

Caitlin says Killer Frost has been in hiding for the past few days. She thinks it is because Killer Frost has never really had to cope with the loss of someone she cared about before.

Ralph offers Caitlin another guide he wrote - Ralph's 27 Steps To A Better Mourning. #10 is to go see your dentist because you should be doing that at least twice a year anyway and it will distract you from your emotional pain.

Cecile discovers that G. Simone & Associate's mystery client is McCullough Technologies.

Cecile refers to the events of 513 and how Nora may be trying to break up an illegal arms deal like Barry and Ralph did.

Iris says she has a whistle-blower at the DOD who might be able to tell them about what McCullough Technologies is building.

Iris says she thinks there has to be another reason why Nora is committing this robbery and didn't come to Team Flash for help.

Nora steals Spencer Young's phone from 504 from the STAR-chives.

Rag Doll attacks Cisco and Sherloque in the elevator, after entering STAR Labs through the sewers.

Barry notes that Nora's lightning is now red and her eyes are glowing red, like Thawne's.

Iris gets an alarm from STAR Labs. She and Barry see Ragdoll and Weather Witch breaking in through a camera feed.

Sherloque deduces he and Cisco are being held in Keystone City based on the smell of barium in the air.

XS asked for the rest of the team to kidnap Cisco so he could reprogram Spencer Young's phone to work for someone else.

Sherloque apologies for outing XS' secret to the rest of Team Flash.

The rest of the Young Rogues learn XS is The Flash's daughter.

Caitlin and Ralph discover that Cicada has robbed the lab of all the intravenous electrolytes.

Ralph says his book has helped other people but never worked for him. He thinks he isn't built for love but is okay with that.

Caitlin says that is a Ralph is a kind, compassionate and intelligent man who deserves to be loved.

Ralph thinks Caitlin is flirting with him but tries to let her down easy. She says that he's being gross and that she wasn't trying to say that she fancied him.

Caitlin says that the prototypes for the metahuman cure were stolen from the lab as well.

Cisco recognizes that Sherloque is afraid to tell his girlfriend that he knows she is a metahuman, in the same way that Cisco is afraid to tell his girlfriend about that part of his life.

Sherloque also suggests that Cisco wants to stop being Vibe.

Cecile determines that Central City contracted McCullough Technologies to clean up the streets following The Enlightenment. This leads Team Flash to the conclusion that they must have acquired a ton of meta-tech scrap that is now being used to make new weapons.

Barry and Iris once again argue about whether or not Nora can be trusted. Barry wants to use Cisco's force-field or Ray Palmer's nanites to catch her.

Iris tells Barry that she honestly believes Thawne cares for Nora and that Thawne told Iris to go back to the present and try and work out her current issues with Barry before confronting Nora again. She also says she honestly thinks Thawne is trying to win some kind of redemption.

Nora plans to have everyone on her team except Rag Doll enter McCullough Technologies disguised as military VIPs.

Weather Witch ran away from her abusive mother once she turned 13.

Weather Witch, Bug-Eyed Bandit and Ragdoll are all of the opinion that you can't trust anyone and that family and mentors will let you down eventually.

Cisco hacks Spencer Young's phone so Bug-Eyed Bandit can use it. He also gives it unlimited data, but programs it to have spotty reception so he and Sherloque are able to win free of its mind-controlling effects once Bug-Eyed Bandit is far away.

Weather Witch says she abandoned Silver Ghost in Bolivia. It is unclear if she killed her or not, but she definitely betrayed her trust.

Iris, Joe and Barry sneak into The Forge using image-inducers to look like military officials.

Sherloque uses the STAR Labs hologram projector to pose as The Flash to act as a distraction.

Cisco hacks Bug-Eyed-Bandit's bees and shuts them down.

Barry convince Nora he truly has forgiven her after he takes a lightning bolt from Weather Witch for her.

Nora explains that she wasn't breaking into McCullouch Technologies looking for a weapon to kill Cicada - she was looking for a special gun that could atomize Cicada's dagger.

Caitlin has figured Cicada's plan - to kill every metahuman in Central City using the cryo-atomizer along with the imperfect metahuman cures Cisco developed.

The final scene reveals that Cicada hallucinates her Uncle Orlin being with her and encouraging her in her work.

Location

Dr. Thomas Snow's lab - Arctic Circle
McCullough Technologies Factory- Keystone City

Untelevised Adventures

Apparently Silver Ghost and Weather Witch had a falling out after escaping to Bolivia.

The Boomerang Factor

The biggest sign that we shouldn't take the villains in this episode seriously? Cisco and Sherloque argue about their love lives while in the middle of being held hostage.

The Bottom Line

A bit of a mess, thanks to a script that seems to have either been written by someone who hadn't been watching the show or hurriedly rewritten to account for missing characters or story lines that didn't get filmed. It tries too hard to be a tribute to Gail Simone's Secret Six, though Ragdoll is well-handled) and some of the comedic bits work well.  Still, too much of the episode is repetitive (Barry and Iris having the same argument from last week) and there's way too much out-of-character behavior.

The Flash Episode Guide: Season 5, Episode 10 - The Flash And The Furious

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

As Nora quietly copes with the revelation that Eobard Thawne killed her grandmother, Team Flash must focus on a new threat - a new meta-tech villain called Silver Ghost, whose powers let her control motorized technology, who intends to build a new Rogues gang starting with Weather Witch.  At the same time, Cisco and Caitlin start to discuss the possibility of creating a medical treatment to neutralize the metagene.

Influences

The Return of Barry Allen (Eobard Thawne's backstory as a Flash fanboy driven crazy by the knowledge he would become his hero's worst enemy ), the JSA comics of Geoff Johns (Thawne/Nora relationship resembles Rex and Rick Tyler), The Fast And The Furious films (title is a pun on the name, plot involves fast cars) and every X-Men comic to deal with the concept of a "cure" for mutation.

Goofs

Given the dangers posed by meta-tech, it seems highly likely that the usual rules regarding evidence might be suspended so as not to allow a criminal access to a piece of technology that might be used to escape.

Apart from being a control freak who doesn't cope well with surprises, why does Cecile lose her cool over Barry having to leave to deal with "police business" and Nora testifying instead of him?  Surely this isn't the first time a police officer scheduled to testify in court got called away because of an emergency or be delayed by a traffic accident? Is a one-day trial delay really going to kill her case?

The whole subplot with Caitlin and Cisco arguing the ethics of a metahuman cure is idiotic and horribly out of character for both of them. Granting that Caitlin has turned around on her "other self", she seems to have completely forgotten how scared she was of her powers and how desperate she was to get rid of them. Cisco, in turn, seems to have completely forgotten how much he likes helping people with his abilities and being a superhero. They should both be smart enough to realize they could make a general cure for metapowers and find a way to make it available while insuring it isn't mandatory to use... which eventually is what happens!

What was the point of Silver Ghost saluting the guards?

If Silver Ghost disabled everything connected to the Iron Heights prison transport, why did the on-board security cameras still work and get video footage of her when the door locks failed?

Weather Witch turning herself into the cops directly would have been way easier than hacking a weather system to try and get Team Flash's attention. Not to mention a lot less illegal, even if she did think that getting a hero to vouch for her would help sell her story that she was kidnapped.

Why didn't the security cameras in the truck catch Weather Witch's confusion at being busted out? Surely there should be cameras watching the inside of the truck as well?

So the CCPD doesn't leave any personnel in the evidence lock-up or the cell-block where prisoners are kept when all the vehicle sirens go off at once?

What kind of stealth vehicle has glowing blue rims?

Silver Ghost is kind of an idiot if the first thing she does after stealing an experimental stealth vehicle is drive around really fast and make it blindingly obvious where she is.

Come to that, why does Silver Ghost need to recruit Weather Witch anyway? Couldn't she just steal the Weather Staff and use it herself?

How the heck does the Weather Staff let someone teleport?

Flash Facts

Thawne's monologue about wanting to go back and become The Flash matches up pretty well with Thawne's origins as depicted in The Return of Barry Allen. It was revealed here that he was a Flash fanboy from the future who copied his hero's accident so he could go back in time and meet him. Unfortunately, this led to his discovering a piece of knowledge lost to the historians of his time - that The Reverse-Flash was a man from the future named Eobard Thawne. The knowledge that he was predestined to become his hero's worst enemy drove Thawne mad and made him determined to kill The Flash so that his life would not be wasted.

There is a previously established DC Comics villain called The Silver Ghost, but they have no connection to the Arrowverse villain.

The first Silver Ghost was an enemy of The Freedom Fighters of Earth-X, who fought the team during the time they briefly traveled between worlds and came to Earth-1.  Born Raphael Van Zandt, he was a crime boss who had the power to turn anything he touched into silver. Pre-Crisis, he used this power to turn half of the Freedom Fighters into statues and threatened to melt them down if the rest of the team didn't obey his orders. Thankfully, they were eventually restored to life after Silver Ghost was defeated.

Post-Crisis, Raphael Van Zandt was a prominent Nazi leader on Earth-X, who was brought down by the hero Firebrand. He would later travel from Earth-X to Earth-1 in search of Firebrand and gained his powers during the trip between dimensions. He hired the Secret Society of Super-Villains to help him fight the Freedom Fighters and Firebrand.  The two would eventually be turned into silver statues together as the two enemies struggled while the Silver Ghost tried to use his powers only to have his ability reflected back upon him.

The Arrowverse version of Silver Ghost is a former USAF pilot, mechanic and expert on vehicle operations named Raya Van Zandt. She was dishonorably discharged. Her call sign was Silver Ghost.

At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Eobard Thawne is living on borrowed time and has roughly 51 minutes before he is presumably scheduled to be executed. The entire set-up is reminiscent of the JSA comics of Geoff Johns and the relationship between Rex and Rick Tyler - two of the heroes who were known as Hourman. Rex, the father, was pulled from time before he was fated to die and placed in a pocket dimension. For one hour, he and his son would be given a chance to say goodbye to each other as Rick approached his father a few minutes at a time when he needed advice.

Technobabble

The Lamborghini Barry touched was saturated with unstable dark matter. Because he was phasing at the time, it caused his molecules to destabilize.

The winds hitting the airport created by Weather Witch ranged from 150-250 MPH.

Lightning is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. (Roughly 30,000 kelvins vs. 6,000 kelvins)

Cisco ran a bio-chemical analysis on the shards from his hands and discovered that they were draining the dark matter from his system. This proves that the shards weren't dampening his powers - they were removing them. This means that Cicada's dagger has anti-dark-matter properties, which means they could potentially use this to synthesize a serum to negate metahuman powers.

The meta-tech keychain fob broadcasts a dark matter pulse that can take over anything with a guidance system or an engine.

The police call in 595 reports when their sirens start sounding in their own at CCPD HQ.  A 595 is the scanner code for a runaway car.

The Stealth Auto-Mobile, or SAM, took ten years and $24 million to develop. Rumor has it everything under its hood was developed by WayneTech. It is said to be completely untrackable by conventional radar. It is also capable of short-term phasing, can become invisible and has front-mounted rockets that can be remotely detonated.

Dialogue Triumphs

Thawne: For as long as I can remember, all I ever thought about was myself. But that will not be my legacy! That will not be the legacy of Eobard Thawne! (hissing) Let me help you.
Nora: I don't want your help. Not anymore.

Cisco: (Sighing with relief) Hey. You feel that?
Sherloque: Feel what?
Cisco: That's the feeling of free time!c KA unbillable hours, so we'd better not be seeing any invoices from you in the near future.
Sherloque: Oh, that's all right.
(Cisco leaves the room.)
Sherloque: (quietly) This is one mystery I will solve for free.
(Sherloque returns to his computer, where he is looking at the mysterious time language.)

(Nora asks if Barry believes even someone like Thawne could become good.)
Barry: I think part of being a hero is being able to see the good in people. So yeah. Maybe someday, in the future, even Thawne could change. Besides, if we don't believe in people, who will?

Dialogue Disasters

The Flash: I can't stop vibrating!

Continuity

Thawne is revealed to be the one who taught Nora how to use her powers to time-travel.

Thawne claims that he helped Nora because they shared a desire to go back in time and get to know The Flash.

Thawne claims he never told Nora that he killed her grandmother because he had just assumed Iris West would have told her that.

Ralph is said to be visiting his mother.

Nora refers to the events of Elseworlds, saying she picked up Barry's blue suit figuring he'd be sick of the color green.

Joe West is said to be visiting Wally West, along with his and Cecile's new baby, Jenna.

Cecile is returning to work for the first time since her pregnancy. Her first case is the trial of Weather Witch, at which Barry is scheduled to testify.

Weather Witch was last seen in 507.

Weather Witch's case number is 99512.

Weather Witch's crimes occurred between November 20 and 27th 2018. Episode 507 aired on November 27, 2018. The charges include property damage at Iron Heights, grounding 21 flights and attempted murder.

Cecile gets an odd feeling during the trial.

Caitlin removes the meta-metal shards from Cisco's hands so they can start healing properly.

Caitlin can now use Killer Frost's powers to suture a wound.

Barry is temporarily left unable to stop vibrating after his encounter with Silver Ghost.

The Pipeline cells are located directly under the entrance to the STAR Labs comms room.

Nora is called to testify instead of Barry.

Cecile decides to pursue a lighter sentence for Weather Witch since she can telepathically feel her remorse.

Cecile starts making a case that nobody was hurt during Weather Witch's rampage and argues against her own evidence that lighting struck the tarmac by saying that it could have struck people.

Weather Witch's lawyer tries to argue that dark matter infusions can corrupt a person.  Nora says that isn't how it works.

Weather Witch changes her plea to guilty, saying she deserves to be punished for what she did.

Cisco argues they should make a metahuman cure to save the world from people like Fallout, from 410.

Caitlin, in turn, argues that not everyone wants a normal life and metahuman powers can do a lot of good.

Silver Ghost breaks Weather Witch

Nora insists that Weather Witch had to have been "in" on her escape because bad people don't change.

Silver Ghost is planning to form a new group she calls The Young Rogues, that will be young women. She has a few recruits in mind, but wants to keep it to just her and Weather Witch to start.

Silver Ghost has a file on Spyn, from 504.

Silver Ghost wants to raid an ARGUS facility and steal the technology inside of it. She figures the security system can be disable with a precise lightning strike.

Sherloque gives Barry a copy of Uncaged Desire to read, which he says was dropped off by The Legends. This is the book it was revealed that Mick Rory had published under his nom de plume Rebecca Silver in L408. Barry says later that it was surprisingly well-written.

Iris is able to get a copy of Silver Ghost's sealed military record from a contact of her father's named Major Morgan. It shows that she had an exemplary record before going overseas for a failed mission, coming back, working a desk job for two months then suddenly being dishonorably discharged. Iris believes she became the scapegoat for the failed mission.

Cisco believes that, unlike Barry, he can't balance being a hero and having a wife and kids.

Barry affirms that he believes anyone can change for the better, specifically pointing to Captain Cold.

The tech Silver Ghost wanted to steal from ARGUS is a stealth automobile developed by WayneTech.

Weather Witch ices up the road to stop the SAM. She then manages to teleport herself and Silver Ghost away with a lightning bolt.

Wally is apparently still in Tibet.

Cecile tried using the extrapolater to go visit Joe and Wally in Tibet and wound up in Fiji.

The Breakfast Club is one of the few movies both Caitlin and Killer Frost like.  Killer Frost is said to have a crush on Bender.

Caitlin takes Cisco to her father's lab, thinking Cisco can use his research to create a metagene to cure one. She agrees to help Cisco find the cure he wants so long as he agrees not to force the cure on anyone Cisco agrees to that.

It is revealed that Thawne is facing a countdown until he dies in 2049. at the end of the episode, he has 51 minutes and 56 seconds left.

Nora says she doesn't trust Thawne but is willing to give him a chance to change her mind about his desire to change for the good.

Sherloque approaches Gideon in the Time Vault and asks for all of her files on Nora. Gideon says that all of those files were erased by Nora.

Location

Iron Heights Prison - 2049

Untelevised Adventures

Joe is said to be visiting Wally in Tibet.

The Fridge Factor

Cecile doesn't even try to hide the fact that she's sabotaging her own case trying to get Weather Witch leniency.

The Boomerang Factor

Barry is sidelined for the entire episode by some mysterious property of Silver Ghost's powers that causes him to become insubstantial when he tries to touch a car she is controlling while phased.

The Bottom Line

Quite possibly the dumbest episode of The Flash ever and certainly the worst of Season Five and not just because Barry is barely in the episode. Everyone is written out of character to make the plot work. Nora in particularly is twisted around to such a degree that she actually manages to eclipse Iris as the most annoying and pig-headed character on the show. And that's an accomplishment in an episode where Cecile starts intentionally trying to blow a case, Killer Frost wrecks STAR Labs equipment with Caitlin's apparent approval, Cisco forgets all about "great power = great responsibility", and the generally psychotic Weather Witch from three episodes ago is suddenly a reluctant villain. Worst of all? We're going to see more of The Young Rogues after this, gods give us strength.

The Flash Episode Guide: Season 5, Episode 7 - O Come, All Ye Thankful

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

As Nora grapples with her unresolved anger regarding her father's disappearance in the future, Team Flash must stop a new villain - The Weather Witch - from killing The Weather Wizard! At the same time, Cicada ponders how he became who he is and what he will do next, as it seems the police are hot on his trail.

Influences

The Flash comics of Geoff Johns (idea of Weather Wizard having a kid.)

Goofs

Logically, Nora's complaints about Barry nearly dying don't make much sense since the fact that she continues to exist means that Barry must survive.

Reference is made to Mardon's Weather Wand. While he did briefly use the device to focus his powers in Season 2, the wand was originally built by Cisco Ramon to counteract Mardon's metahuman abilities.

Where is Ralph in this episode?  Cecile and Joe's absence is explained, but not his. (Ralph has a grandmother he always spends Christmas with. Maybe he spent Thanksgiving with her this year?)

Performances

Freed from the need to grunt and looked pained, Chris Klein gives a great performance here in the flashbacks as he shows how Orlin Dwyer became Cicada.

Flash Facts

The character of Weather Witch is loosely based on a character from the Flash comics named Joshua Jackham, who first appeared in The Flash #170 in March 2001.The biological son of CCPD cop Julie Jackham and Weather Wizard Mark Mardon (The two had a one night stand with neither one knowing the other as a cop or criminal respectively), Joshua was born with the metahuman ability to control the weather. This caused Mardon to seek out his son, hoping to find a way to transfer his son's powers to himself. Joshua was later killed by Kid Zoom during the events of Final Crisis.

Jocelyn "Joss" Jackam is a delinquent teen turned amateur storm-chaser. Abandoned by Mark Mardon as a child, she wanted revenge on her dead-beat dad. Her discovery of a piece of meta-tech (i.e. a weather vane that could control the weather) gave her the power she needed to go after he father. She is given the name of Weather Witch.

There is an ironic twist considering the two different characters. In the comics, Mark Mardon gains his powers from technology and has a child who has weather-control powers.  In The Arrowverse, Mardon becomes a metahuman and his daughter uses technology to replicate his powers.

Weather Witch asks for her father to be taken to Porter Plaza. This is likely a tribute to Howard Porter - one of the artists on The Flash monthly comic.

Technobabble

An experimental cold fusion core from Mercury Labs is located in the power plant The Weather Witch first attacks.

Nora is able to rub her hands together to generate electricity, acting like a defibrillator.

A weather-vane tool Joss used became infused with a satellite shard, creating a meta-tech staff that let her control the weather in the area round her.

Using old fashioned meteorology equipment, Sherloque detects an artificially created pressure system of uncertain origin heading for downtown before Cisco's satellites detect it.

Dialogue Triumphs

Sherloque: I don't understand. Explain again to me what is the difference between this day and every other day in America?
Cisco: It's a holiday, when we all get together and celebrate and eat a ton of food. Like, a gross amount.
Sherloque: Again - what is the difference between this day and every other day in America?
Cisco: ... that's legit.

(Orlin is telling Grace about his plan to fix up the house and the dollhouse so they have a proper home.)
Orlin: Well, I was thinking that, while I work on this place, we could... work on this one too.  Together? (pauses) Listen, you were right, kid. I do hate me. I don't really know any other way to be. But... I want to do right by you, Gracie. I want to keep you safe and warm and fed. You know? Just.. give you all the things a kid should have.
(Grace looks at him skeptically but then reaches over and picks up a piece of the dollhouse furniture.)
Grace: Let's start with the dollhouse.

Barry: Nora... people need The Flash.
(Nora pulls herself out of the hug, looks at Barry and walks away.)
Nora: I need my dad.

Cisco: By the beard of Zeus, she's making a tornado out of lightning!

(Sherloque, Caitlin and Cisco are getting drunk as part of their celebration of "the thankless." Suddenly, Caitlin changes to Killer Frost.)
Killer Frost: All right, boys. I'm tapping in.
(Sherloque spit-takes.)
Killer Frost: All right. So let me get this straight. You two losers are sitting here, in what I can only assume is the cantina of a starship, drinking and eating terrible food, when you could drinking and eating amazing food with people who actually care about you.
(Cisco and Sherloque laugh patronizling before their faces become pained.)
Both: Well, when you put it like that...
Sherloque:
She has a good point.
Cisco: You have a good point, yeah.
Killer Frost: And by the way? I have the least to celebrate this year, because I spent most of it unconscious.
(Killer Frost leaves the room and calls back.)
Killer Frost: Are you nerds coming to Thanksgiving or not?!

Dialogue Disasters

Weather Witch: I'm so pissed! This city will drown, crumble, burn, because of you!

Continuity

Barry goes to Grace Gibbons's hospital room but is stopped by Dr. Ambres. She says that Grace's parents are dead and she has no legal guardian and she has the charts to prove it.

Cicada's name is confirmed, by the flashbacks, to be Orlin Dwyer. Grace Gibbons is his niece, the daughter of his sister, who was killed in a metahuman attack.

It's Barry and Iris's first Thanksgiving at their loft.

Caitlin is now able to talk to Killer Frost telepathically without using the mental activity dampener.

Joe and Cecile are spending Thanksgiving with Cecile's family.

Nora and Iris seem to be getting along better.

The Flash Museum has a 3-D model of The Flash running into the Singularity from 201. However, the display doesn't mention Ronnie Raymond's sacrifice.

Dr. Ambres faked the charts which she showed Barry. She tells Orlin she thinks he needs to stay way from Grace from now on.

Orlin Dwyer originally did not want to take custody of Grace.

Sherloque's Earth does not celebrate Thanksgiving.

Sherloque has no family, apart from his five ex-wives. None of his seven marriages resulted in children.

Sherloque indulges in art therapy in his downtime.

Grace became a problem child, as she copied Orlin's cursing habit.

Cicada is currently strong enough to dent a refrigerator door by punching it.

The Bottom Line

Decent enough. The villain of the week falls flat, thouth the episode tries to spin three different stories of how fathers and daughters connect. Unfortunately, we never truly see Mardon and his daughter connect and Nora's sudden realization that, "OMG, heroes can die trying to help people!" makes her seem like kind of an idiot, Still, the scenes revealing Cicada's motivations are touching and help make the character a bit more sympathetic, though it seems odd that he really is just a serial killer trying to kill as many metahumans as possible with no greater plan than that. Still, that could be coming...
