Black Lightning Episode Guide: Season 1, Episode 7 - Equinox: The Book of Fate

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

As Jefferson continues in his efforts to hunt down Tobias Whale and bring him to justice, Anissa struggles to find "the new normal" in the wake of discovering her powers. Meanwhile, things heat up as Tobias makes his move against Lady Eve and Black Lightning.

Influences

The Black Lightning comics of Tony Isabella.

Goofs

Jefferson doesn't trust Gambi any more, yet trusts him enough to let his family hide in his basement?

Artistry

The fight choreography between Tobias Whale and his sparring partner is fantastic.

Trivia

The outfit that Gambi wears while killing Joey Toledon resembles the costume of the classic pulp vigilante The Shadow.

Tobias Whale keeps a copy of Moby Dick on his desk. This is, of course, a classic novel about a great white whale.

By the end of the episode, Lady Eve is dead and Black Lightning has been framed the murder. A similar thing happened in the comics, with Black Lightning being blamed for the death of Joey Toledo. This fueled Inspector Henderson's determination to bring Black Lightning to justice until the hero proved himself to the old cop.

Technobabble

Some of Lynn's research has to do with addiction and its effect on the human brain.

Lynn did not get a chance to look at Alvin's research beyond noting some pretty advanced biochemical formulas.

The costume Gambi plans for Anissa will be made of a breathable Kevlar weave so it will be bulletproof even when she isn't. It will also be fireproof, water-resistant and contain a state-of-the-art neuro-interface technology stitched into the lining that will let Gambi monitor her vitals.

Tobias' men attack Lady Eve using some kind of high-tech energy weapon that electrocutes its victims.

Dialogue Triumphs

Anissa: This is a gift from God, Mom! A blessing!
Lynn: You sound just like your father...
Anissa: (scoffs) And that's a bad thing?!

Gambi: Have I done something to upset you?
Jefferson: It's what you didn't do, Gambi. Why didn't you tell me Tobias was back in Freeland?
Gambi: (annoyed) We're back to this again?
Jefferson: Yes, we are! Do you expect me to believe it took you two hours to get some intel on thieves on the dark web, but you haven't heard anything - ANYTHING - about a six-foot albino in Freeland?!
Gambi: I told you I didn't know!
Jefferson: I know what you told me! It doesn't mean I believe you.
Gambi: (sighs and takes off his glasses) I didn't tell you in order to protect you...
Jefferson: From Tobias?
Gambi: From yourself.
(Gambi walks around the counter to stand right in front of Jefferson.)
Gambi: Jefferson, I didn't want you to do something that you'd regret for the rest of your life. There's no coming back from something like that. Trust me.
Jefferson: (cooly) That's just it. I don't.
(Jefferson turns around and walks away.)

Tobias: I thought PCP was bad. This Green Light is on a whole other level. It's too volatile. Too addictive. Truthfully, it's killing too many people and dead customers don't pay.

(Gambi wants Tobias Whale brought down.)
Lady Eve: You could have Joey Toledo. Toledo is Tobias' right hand. If you remove him from the equation, maybe Tobias will get the hint and start being more careful?
Gambi: And if Tobias doesn't fall in line?
Lady Eve: I'll throw him off that bridge when I get to it.

Lynn: When you do what your father does - what you want to do? Everybody gets a happy ending but you.
Anissa: But the community, they fell apart, Mom, without Black Lightning. But the people are starting to believe that they can get up from The 100 again. Up from the crooked police. Look, I can finally help Dad free Freeland. And I'm willing to sacrifice my happiness so that other people can have theirs.

Jefferson: I'm a hypocrite. You know how I always get on you to keep your head? I've let my emotions get the best of me over and over again. And tonight, a young lady died.
Anissa: Dad, listen-
Jefferson: No, no, no. We are both gonna make mistakes. Horrible mistakes. But without us, Freeland doesn't stand a chance. (chuckles) I don't know everything. But what I do know, I'm going to teach my daughter.
Anissa: No, you're not a hypocrite. You're great. You're a great dad. A great principal. The greatest hero. I mean, Dad, I can only hope to live up to your example.
Jefferson: No. Be better than me.

Continuity

Anissa has some degree of enhanced healing, like her father.

Gambi lies to Jefferson about the men who attacked Lynnbeing part of a gang of roving tech thieves.

Lady Eve sends some of her men out to hit the men who attacked Lynn.

Lynn works at Bowman College

Lady Eve has Gambi listed in the contacts on her phone as The Tailor.

Tobias Whale addresses his female assassin as Syonide for the first time.

Jefferson says that Tobias Whale hasn't aged a day in 30 years.

Anissa tells Jefferson about how she got Alvin's research from David Poe in 105.

Tobias makes a 300% profit on what is invested in him by the 100.

Tobias is about to open a new nightclub in Freeland.

Jennifer figures out something is going on between Anissa and Jefferson.

David Poe died several days earlier, struck by a car on his morning bike ride.

Gambi kills Joey Toledo, leaving a box full of albino bone dust on the body.

Anissa tried walking for the first time when she was 10 months old.

Lynn asks Jefferson to train Anissa as a vigilante.

Tobias refers to the group behind Lady Eve as The Shadow Board.

Black Lightning is saved on Inspector Henderson's phone as The Electrician.

The two men who attacked Lynn are found dead near PAX Institute.

Gambi starts designing a superhero suit for Anissa.

During Black Lightning's attack on Tobias' new club, Tobias is wounded by one of his men when his gun goes wild while in auto-fire mode. He is taken away to safety..

Tori Whale is wounded and left for dead, dying as Black Lightning gets to her.

Lady Eve is killed by Tobias' men.

Anissa calls Grace and asks her out for a date as soon as they both have time.

Lady Eve's full real name was Evelyn Stillwater-Ferguson.

Black Lightning is framed for the deaths of Lady Eve and her employees.

In the end of the episode, Lala - who Tobias killed in 102 - is resurrected. He has a vision of LaWanda White, who he killed in the same episode, before a tattoo of her face appears on his chest.

The Fridge Factor

Tori Whale is killed off only to give Tobias one more reason to want to kill Black Lightning and to give Jefferson more angst over his vigilantism getting other people killed.

The Bottom Line

Problematic in that it kills two of its main female characters, but at least it does so in a way that is plot-relevant in the case of Lady Eve and at least Tori Whale goes down fighting. Still, the action of the final fifteen minutes is thrilling enough though I have no idea what to make of the final scene. You can bet I'll be anxious to see how this develops next week, though.

Black Lightning Episode Guide: Season 1, Episode 6 - Three Sevens: The Book of Thunder

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

Jefferson hits the streets to hunt down Tobias Whale as Anissa takes action after a local protest of a Confederate monument turns violent thanks to a group of White Nationalists. Meanwhile, Gambi turns to Lynn for help in stopping Jefferson from going over the line and becoming a killer as Jennifer makes a fateful choice regarding her relationship with Khalil.

Influences

The Green Arrow and Outsiders comics of Judd Winick. (Jefferson Pierce being portrayed as willing to kill.)

Goofs

Why didn't the base of the statue collapse along with the statue itself? Thunder's shockwave should have passed through it into the statue when she stomped the ground.

Artistry

The sequence of Thunder destroying the statue is a powerfully shot and directed moment.

The flashback sequences of Alvin Pierce's murder are suitably horrific.

The fight between Black Lighting and Thunder is well choreographed and a great use of special effects.

Trivia

The scene of Black Lightning looking down at Tobias Whale, ready to strike him down, mirrors a similar scene from Judd Winick's run on Green Arrow where Black Lighting struck down the businessman responsible for arranging the murder of his niece.  A later retcon changed it so that instead, Deathstroke the Terminator killed the man in away that made Black Lightning think he was responsible for the death, even though he only mildly electrocuted the man.

Technobabble

Lynn uses a portable CAT Scan machine to check Jefferson for brain damage. She determines that his powers are still overcharging his ability to heal, noting he still heals twice as fast as a normal person even though he's slowed down from when he was younger.

The brain scans of the Green Light addicts are unusual, being "lit up like a Christmas tree" where the grey-matter should be dark.

The research Anissa found in her grandfather's storage unit is scientific research into human mitochondria and how they provide energy in human cells that can be altered in various ways to potentially create super powers.

Gambi says that Jefferson's powers are largely neurological and that his brain picks up and uses electricity the same way a normal person might pick-up any other tool.

The Black Lightning suit prevents Jefferson from blowing out his nervous system by using his powers. When the resistance is set too high, it causes feedback (i.e. the headaches that Jefferson had been having)

Albinos suffer from eye problems and skin ailments far more than most people. This requires them to seek regular medical treatment.

Dialogue Triumphs

Jefferson: (To Anissa) Let me ask you a question. Should I have you committed? Because you've obviously lost your damn mind.
Anissa: That statue, Dad, is an insult to black people, glorifying a national traitor.
Jefferson: You broke the law, Anissa. That gives the police an excuse to hurt you. And on top of that, you used guns. Guns!
Anissa: They were water guns.
Jefferson: They looked enough like real guns to be the end of you. All it takes is for one cop - one cop - to see your color instead of your humanity and decide "better dead than sorry". (sighs) Look, you're a black woman. You don't have the luxury of being naive.
Anissa: I know. I know. You've said that a thousand times-
Jefferson: Then hear it!
Anissa: Okay!.
Jefferson: And I will stop saying it!
Anissa: Okay!

Gambi: Jefferson? I don't know what you're up to, but there is a difference between you and Tobias. You need to keep it that way.

(One of the burglars raises his gun on Thunder. She holds her breath and he empties his gun into her. She grabs it from him, throws it away, then throws him across the room. The second burglar, clearly shaken, raises his gun, hands shaking as he stares down Thunder.)
Thunder:
What? You thought he missed?

(Jefferson, looking down at the injured, costume-clad Anissa.)
Jefferson: What the hell was she doing?
Lynn: What you do! She has powers, Jeff!

Gambi: Evelyn.
Lady Eve: Peter Gambi. How did you get past all my security?
Gambi: Evelyn, I taught you everything you know. Not everything I know.

Continuity

The episode opens immediately where 105 ended, with Jefferson passing out after fighting Joey Toledo and the police en route to catch him.

Gambi is able to get to Jefferson and saves him before the police find him.

Tobias Whale once again makes reference to Lady Eve's threat regarding the magical properties of albino's bones from 104.

Tobias Whale has a protection squad watching his sister Tori in the face of Lady Eve's threat.

Jefferson says he was there when Tobias Whale killed his father, Alvin Pierce.

Anissa is arrested for vandalizing a statue of a Confederate general with a super-soaker full of red paint along with a group of other activists.

Jennifer says she's the only one in the Pierce family who is bad at math.

Jennifer says that she's reconsidering her relationship with Khalil in the face of his paralysis but feels guilty about that.

Jefferson gets the feeling that Gambi is reluctant to see him go after Tobias Whale.

Anissa asks Lynn to help her with researching the data Alvin Pierce uncovered.

Lynn's research assistant seems to be in the employ of The 100. We see him going to make a phone-call after he sees Lynn comparing the Green Line users brain scans to Jefferson's. Gambi also seems to go out of his way to talk to Lynn before her assistant shows up.

Jefferson begins investigating doctors in Freeland who specialize in treating albinos to try and find Tobias Whale.

Khalil begins joining in with the girls cyber-bullying Jennifer, now blaming her for his paralysis since he only went to the rally in 103 to be with her.

Anissa puts on her new Thunder costume to destroy the statue following a White Nationalist driving his car into a group of student protesters, killing one 19 year old woman.

Anissa was born on June 28, 1994

Jennifer was born on October 7, 2001.

Anissa is bullet proof when she braces herself.

Anissa also proves to be immune to her father's electrical attacks, though she still develops a concussion, bruises and burns once he starts magnetically throwing her against the floor and ceiling instead of just trying to shock her.

Jefferson and Lynn discover that Anissa has super powers.

Tobias Whale and Syonide take Khalil on a ride, saying that he will walk again very soon and learn what it is to be a wolf among sheep.

Lady Eve's real name is Evelyn.

Gambi claims to have taught Lady Eve everything she knows. They were part of the same Agency before they both retired.

Apparently there was some kind of deal Gambi negotiated that made The Pierce Family off-limits. Lady Eve says the bargain is still in place, but that Lynn Stewart had been engaging in some off-limits research. The burglars were just supposed to steal her research. They were not expecting her to be there or the metahuman who attacked The Plummer Crew (i.e. Thunder).

This is the first episode in which metahumans are mentioned, suggesting the term is not unknown in the universe of Black Lightning.

Gambi says he could have outed Tobias Whale in the past but didn't. Lady Eve says that if anything happens to Tobias Whale, Gambi's dirty laundry will be revealed as well.

The Winick Factor

Portryaing Jefferson Pierce as a man capable of killing in cold blood is a Winickian conceit.

The Bottom Line

Not the most well-written episode. There's not a lot of snappy dialogue and there's way too many subplots starting out. As a result, nothing seems like it gets very well developed up until the third act when the Anissa, Jefferson and Lynn subplots all come crashing together. This still leaves Jennifer's bully subplot just sitting there and everything with Khalil comes out of left field after his absence last week. Still, hopefully the disjointed feel of the show over the past two weeks will get better now that Anissa and Jefferson know each others secrets.

Black Lightning Episode Guide: Season 1, Episode 5 - And Then The Devil Brought Plague: The Book Of Green Light

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

Jefferson continues to investigate the source of the new drug Green Light, discovering that his old enemy Joey Toledo is back in town. Unfortunately, Jefferson's started suffering headaches and acting more aggressively in a way that has both Gambi and Lynn worried. In the meantime, Jennifer rivalry with another girl turns ugly as Anissa's exploration of her superpowers leads her to discover an unlikely connection to her grandfather, reporter Alvin Pierce.

Influences

The Black Lightning comics of Tony Isabella.

Performances

There's some great non-verbal acting on the part of Cress Williams and China Anne McClain, in the discussion of Jennifer's fight.

Artistry

The fight between Joey Toledo and Black Lightning is great, well-blocked and well-shot.

Trivia

The packing slip seen in the opening of the episode identifies Freeland as being in the state of Georgia and having the ZIP Code 30318. This coresponds to a real-world ZIP Code in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tobias Whale is said to have taken some kind of serum that prevents him from aging. This is likely a reference to how, in the original DC Comics Universe, the crime lords who led The 100 used alchemical and magical rituals to prolong their lives by feeding on the suffering of the people who lived on the lands they owned.

It should be noted that the original Tobias Whale from the comics did not reach the ranks of The 100 that earned this immortality power, acting instead as the face of the gang called The 100 that fed the member of The 100 who drew power off of the Metropolis neighborhood known as Suicide Slum.

This episode reveals that Peter Gambi is part of some organization called The ASA. In the original Black Lighting comics by Tony Isabella, Gambi was a former hitman for the mob in Metropolis, who reformed and became a tailor, sharing his profits with Jefferson Pierce's mother as penance for accidentally killing Jefferson Pierce's father.

The man responsible for distributing Green Light is identified as Joey Toledo. In the original Black Lighting comics by Tony Isabella, Joey Toledo was the operative with The 100 who was responsible for killing one of Jefferson Pierce's students, inspiring him to become Black Lightning.

The DCTVU version of Joey Toledo is Tobias Whale's right-hand man.

Jefferson stealthily disappears while in the middle of a conversation with Inspector Henderson. More than a mere nod to how Batman does the same thing to Commissioner Gordon, this is likely a nod to how, in the comics, Batman trained Jefferson Pierce in several disciplines Jefferson had not studied, including stealth.

Jefferson also pays tribute to The Bat Signal by calling the burner phone he gives Inspector Henderson "The Black Signal."

Anissa buys a blonde wig to wear as part of her superhero costume. In the Outsiders comics, Anissa did wear a blond wig as part of her original Thunder costume.

The bodysuit we see Anissa wearing as part of her costume shares the yellow boots and bracers and general purple/pink color scheme of Anissa's first Thunder costume in the comics, though her catsuit covers her entire body. The costume from the comics is cut rather low in the front and would probably require double-stick tape in order to maintain Anissa's modesty.

Technobabble

An enhancement Gambi added to Jefferson's suit in this episode now allows him to "fly", though honestly he hovers and uses his electrical blasts to enhance his ability to jump father than achieving true flight. He is, however, able to manage an impressive swoop as he moves to save a drug addict strung out on Green Light from being shot by two police officers.

Inspector Henderson says the number of Green Light overdoses is becoming so bad that the first responders in Freeland have all started carrying Naloxone. This is a drug that is used to treat narcotics overdoses in emergency situations.

An issue with the capacitor relay in the new suit is what caused Jefferson's headaches and blackouts.

A control module controls all the programming within The Black Lightning suit.

Jefferson is able to magnetically pull Joey Toledon's gun out of his hand.

Dialogue Triumphs

Black Lightning: Call for an ambulance! This kid is definitely high on Green Light! And next time, try using a Taser first!
Cop: ... yes. sir.
(Black Lightning nods as blasts emit from his hands and he begins to slowly fly upwards as the cops watch in shock.)

Whale: What I need from you is a name. Who is Black Lightning?
Gambi: I can't help you.
Whale: Oh, I think you can.
Gambi: Knowing things about Black Lightning gets men killed. I do my best to avoid knowing things that can get me killed.
Whale: Not telling me what I need to know can get you killed too.

(Inspector Henderson opens his car. He finds a cel-phone in a brown paper bag.)
Inspector Henderson:
Are you serious?
Black Lightning: Hey, I'm old school. It's safer. Consider this... The Black Signal. (chuckles)
Inspector Henderson: You still got jokes, huh?
(Henderson looks up to see that Black Lightning has disappeared from the shadows where he was standing.)
Inspector Henderson:
And you still do that.

Jefferson: Jennifer, how do you expect us to feel when someone shows up to tell us you were involved in a fight and that we didn't know about it?
Jennifer: There were two girls. They both run for Booker T.
Jefferson: (impressed and stunned) Two girls?
(Lynn gives Jefferson "The Look" as in "The Look all wives give husbands to let them know they are saying precisely the wrong thing.")
Jefferson: (defensively) Lana didn't tell us that part. (To Jennifer) You weren't hurt at all?
Jennifer: No. You taught us how to defend ourselves.
(Again, Jefferson look stunned and oddly proud.)
Lynn: Jeff! This is not a good thing!
Jefferson: ... right! (To Jennifer) Right!
(Jennifer rolls her eyes quickly.)
Jefferson: That's no excuse for hurting someone.
Jennifer: I barely touched her.
Lynn: Jennifer, her wrist is broken! And since grounding seems to have no effect on you-
Jennifer: Wait - so I'm not getting grounded?
Lynn: Oh, you are!
Jennifer: Why am I getting in trouble for defending myself?!

Lynn: You're grounded for lying!
Jennifer: I didn't lie. I just didn't tell you guys about it.
Lynn: Oh, you really want to play with me right now, little girl?
Jefferson: (shaking his head) Mmm-mmm. You don't.
Lynn: Exactly! And you need to figure out how to resolve conflict without fighting or losing your temper. And as your father taught you how to fight, he can be a big help, because believe it or not, not everyone solves their problems with their fists!
(Lynn leaves the room. Jefferson turns to Jennifer.)
Jefferson: Two girls?!
Jennifer: Two.

Elridge Whale: At least I stayed, huh?  I didn't leave in the middle of the damn night like your damn mama did. Instead I fed you. And I clothed you. Even tried to take care of them twitch-ass eyes of yours.
(There is a long pause as Tobias finally nods.)
Tobias Whale: You're right. Mom left and you stayed. You did feed and clothe us.  And I can appreciate that. Now. (pauses) Yeah, I can appreciate that.
(Tobias Whale opens his arms and steps forward. Cautiously, Elridge steps forward and hugs him.)
Tobias Whale: The question is why?
(Tobias begins to squeeze Elridge, who begins to cough as we hear the sound of bone crunching.)
Tobias Whale: Why did you stay? Was it so that you could have someone to torture? To beat on? To blame for your failures? Or was it about collecting money from the state? Because it certainly wasn't about love.
(Tobias drops Elridge on the floor, as Tori Whale draws a gun.)
Tobias: You stayed.
(Tobias puts his hand on Tori's gun hand and gently pushes it down.)
Tobias: Leave him. Your back is broken, Elridge. You're gonna die. And you're gonna die slow.
(The two turn their back on their father, as he screams Tobias' name and coughs, writhing in pain.)

Jefferson: "The one thing you can't take away from me, is the way I choose to respond to what you to do me. "
Jennifer: MLK?
Jefferson: Viktor Frankl - Holocaust survivor. How you respond in a crisis is your choice, but to exercise that choice you have to recognize your emotions and regulate them.
Jennifer: Okay, well what about when someone is trying to regulate upside your head?
Jefferson: (chuckles) Look, fighting should never be about adding fuel to the fire. Fighting should only be about putting the fire out. And often... I mean, not the best choice, even when it is so hard to do, is to walk away.
Jennifer: (scoffs) Easier said than done, Yoda.
Jefferson: Yeah. I know, my little Padawan. I know.

Anissa: (to herself) Okay, listen - if you wanna be a superhero, you cannot be afraid of dead rats.

Continuity

Freeland is in the state of Georgia and has the ZIP Code 30318.

Jefferson starts to suffer some kind of strange headaches whenever he uses his powers or comes close to losing his temper,

Tobias Whale had some kind of deal with Peter Gambi where Whale was supposed to leave Freeland forever.

Tobias Whale is confirmed to have taken some kind of serum that prevents him from aging.

Gambi alludes to the serum having some kind of side-effects which The 100 didn't tell Whale about. Tobias sais he figured out everything they didn't tell him.

Tobias Whale says that Gambi works for some organization called the ASA.

Anissa has moved back in with her father and Jennifer.

Anissa finds a video by a conspiracy theorist who claims that 30 years ago in Freeland, around March 30, 1987, there were nine children displayed enhanced abilities before suddenly disappearing.

Lana is a track star at Booker T. Washington High School in Freeland. She is also Khalil's ex-girlfriend.

David Poe was the editor of The Freeland Gazette for over 40 years. He canceled a series of stories, written by Alvin Pierce, about the children with the enhanced abilities and how it tied into vaccinations the children had been given.

The man behind the distribution of Green Light is revealed to be Joey Toledo - Tobias Whale's right-hand man.

Lady Eve is identified as part of the ruling council of the organization backing The 100. Tobias Whale has been working to become part of the same group for years, but was denied promotion due to Black Lightning's efforts.

Elridge Whale was Tobias and Toria's father. He was abusive towards both his children, but particularly Tobias, whose medical care took up half his paycheck.

Jefferson Pierce says that his father always did the right thing and that he sees a lot of him in Anissa.

Black Lighting gives Inspector Henderson a phone that he can use to contact him.

David Poe gives Anissa all of her grandfather's old files.

Tobias Whale breaks Elridge Whale's back and leaves him to die a slow death.

Reference is made to Lady Eve's conversation with Tobias Whale on the African beliefs on the magical properties of albinos from 104 after Tobias receives an envelope full of white powder - presumably the ground bones of another albino.

Anissa wears her new costume to inspect her grandfather's old storage unit. She finds a safe containing a vial filled with some kind of powder.

Joey Toledo's girlfriend is a woman named Caroline Brown.

The Bottom Line

Another solid episode, though much more slow-paced than previous episodes. Still, we get a bit more insight into Tobias Whale's background and learn a bit more about Gambi. Not enough to explain everything, of course, but enough to build the respective mystery around both characters. Anissa's subplot is further expanded with a few interesting twists. The only weak spot is Jennifer's story and that's only due to how disconnected it feels to everything else. Still a great episode of a great series.

Black Lightning Episode Guide: Season 1, Episode 4 - Black Jesus

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

As The 100 introduce a new designer drug called Green Light to the streets of Freeland, the public cries for Black Lightning to lead the fight against them. At the same time, Anissa launches her own war on crime as Jefferson fights to save one student who made one bad choice from being expelled by a school board out for blood.

Influences

The Black Lightning comics of Tony Isabella.

Performances

Jason Louder gives a fantastic comic-relief performance as Frank "Two-Bits" Tanner.

Honestly, the whole ensemble is so fantastic, it's hard to single any one out in each episode so far.

Artistry

The electric vision effects look amazing.

Trivia

The episode title is a reference to Jefferson Pierce's nickname in Freeland, because everyone thinks he can do no wrong and walks on water. It was first mentioned by LaWanda White in 102.

In the classic Black Lightning comic from the 1970s, "Two Bits" Tanner was a low-level informant who helped Black Lightning with tips on The 100's activities. In Black Lightning: Year One, he was retconned into Frank "Two-Five" Tanner - a high-level boss in The 100, who owned one-quarter of their operations, hence the nickname. He was also Jefferson Pierce's brother-in-law.

The DCTVU version of Two-Bits was someone Jefferson Pierce knew growing up, who was a few years younger than him. Two-Bits holds a similar role to his classic comics counterpart as a low-level thug, but he does not dress like Huggybear.

Technobabble

Green Light gives a teenage boy enough strength to rip a urinal off a wall and throw it at least 20 feet. It also gives him enough endurance to shrug off two of Black Lightning's taser-level blasts.  According to Gambi, it's like crack and PCP had a baby in terms of its chemical composition.

The way Green Light attaches to neuro-receptors will hook the target after one taste.

Lady Eve notes that there are some parts of Africa where albinos are considered magical and they are kidnapped and killed so their body parts can be used in rituals.

The goggles of the new Black Lighting costume give Jefferson "electric vision" allowing him to see the electrical signature of any powered object.

Dialogue Triumphs

(Black Lightning shocks a thug, demanding to know who is behind Green Light.)
Thug: Okay!  Two-Bits!
Black Lightning: Two-Bits?
Thug: I know it sounds like a 70's slang name, but that's what he goes by!

Inspector Henderson: Whenever somebody says "no offense", it's usually right before they say something really offensive.

Anissa: Look, somebody has to do something because all of this policing and marching and praying - it hasn't changed anything!

Jefferson:  The cops are coming your way. You might wanna get out of this before it gets too hot for you.
Two-Bits: Get out and do what? (pauses) Look, I appreciate you looking out, but I got a family to take care of.
Jefferson: Yeah, but this Green Light stuff is bad news, bruh. Now look - you want to tell me anything? Maybe I can help.
Two-Bits: I've got nothing to tell.  It is what it is, bruh.

(Gambi is telling Jefferson about the large number of Green Light overdoses.)
Gambi: You'd think it would be on the news.
Jefferson: Yeah, black kids OD-ing has never been newsworthy.

Two-Bits: Hey. The streets are talking man! I heard what you did to Block!
Black Lighting: What did you hear?
Two-Bits: I heard you lit his ass up!
Black-Lightning: Good. That should save us some time.

Two-Bits: Hey, hey, hey. Real, real quick. Before you knock me out? Uh, you think I can get a pic?
(Black Lightning is stunned as Two-Bits puts an arm around his shoulders and pulls out his phone.)
Two-Bits: And can you make sure you light up?
Black-Lightning: What?! No!
(Black Lighting taser-punches Two-Bits and lowers him to the ground. He shakes his head as he walks off.)

(Jefferson is testing the electric-vision of his new suit.)
Gambi: So what do you see?
Jefferson: (awestruck) I see everything.
(We get a POV shot as Jefferson looks at the city, glowing and full of life.)

Tobias Whale: How'd you like the gifts?
(Khalil wakes up from a doze and turns to see Tobias Whale sitting in the guest chair of his room. He moves to turn the light on.)
Tobias Whale: You mind keeping the lights off? They hurt my eyes. (smiles) My name is Tobias Whale.
Khalil: What are you doing in my room?
Tobias Whale: I wanted to see how you were doing.
Khalil: Why'd you give me all those gifts?
Tobias Whale: I understand what you're going through. You see, Black Lightning messed my life up too. I wanted you to have some nice things to keep your mind off your troubles. I know it's hard to see now, but in time you will. Black Lightning's the reason you're lying here paralyzed. There was many times when I was younger I needed help, but no one showed up. I don't want to see you have to go through the same thing.
Khalil: Why?
Tobias Whale: Well... I've followed your athletic career a long time and it hurt me to see you hurt. But what I've learned about pain is pain makes you stronger. Pain makes you tougher. And eventually you get to a point where you don't even feel it. If you'd like, I can show you how to kill your pain.

Continuity

Green Light is a new designer drug made by The 100.

Jefferson has contacts with all the street-level drug dealers in Freeland, but doesn't know any of their bosses.

The dealer behind Green Light is a man called Two-Bits.

Two Bits hangs out at a bar called Tanner's Tap Room on 7th Street.

Tobias Whale used to be a politician in Freeland before starting a new career leading The 100.

Lady Eve is part of the group backing The 100.

Tobias Whale built his reputation on the belief that he killed Black Lightning.

The dealer selling Green Light at Freeland High is named Ronald Wright.

The Freeland High bylaws give the principal sole authority over whether or not a student can be expelled.

Joey Toledo kills the corner who failed to properly identify Black Lightning's body.

Khalil was a two-time state champion sprinter.

Tobias White still has warrants out for his arrest in Freeland.

Tori Whale suggests using Khalil to turn the people of Freeland against Black Lightning.

Khalil is told that his spinal cord is completely severed.

Jefferson gives up his right to final say on expelling students in exchange for saving Bernard from expulsion. Henceforth, the principal has one vote equal to that of all the other school board members.

There is a dope house at 367 34th Street.

The Bottom Line

A fantastic episode with some great comedy moments (courtesy of Two-Bits) and an even expansion of all the subplots so far. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Gambi's secretiveness and Anissa's relationship with Grace. This show continues to intrigue with every passing episode.

Black Lightning Episode Guide: Season 1, Episode 1 - The Resurrection

For a summary of the episode guide layout & categories, click here.

Plot

Once the vigilante known as Black Lightning, high-school principal Jefferson Pierce comes out of retirement when a new gang called The 100 threaten his community and his daughters.

Influences

The Black Lightning comics of Tony Isabella, Black Lighting Year One, the Outsiders comics of Judd Winick and the JSA comics of Geoff Johns.

Goofs

It seems unlikely that the police wouldn't notice Black Lightning posing dramatically next to the neon sign overlooking the crime scene.

This is not quite as unlikely, however, as Jefferson Pierce hanging around in the first place.

Performances

Cress Williams nails the part of Jefferson Pierce, portraying the character's sensitive nature but also his toughness.

James Remar doesn't have much screen time as Peter Gambi, but he steals what few scenes he has.

Likewise, Marvin "Krondon" Jones III doesn't have much time on screen as Tobias Whale, but he is quite intimidating from what little we see of him.

Artistry

The effects work for the various electrical effects is well-played.

The Black Lightning costume looks fantastic.

Trivia

Justice, like lightning
Should ever appear
To some men hope,
And to other men fear!

This poem opens the episode, quoted by Jennifer Pierce. It was written by Tony Isabella for the first Black Lightning comic, paraphrased from a poem by Thomas Randolph. It was written by a young Jefferson Pierce in the comics.

The 100 were first introduced in Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #105 (October 1970) and created by Gerry Conway and Curt Swan. Originally founded in Aragon, Spain in 1462, a group of 71 men and women from around Europe dubbed themselves El Ciento in honor of themselves and their 29 fallen comrades. The group discovered a means of magically extending their lives that required them to draw upon the suffering of people who lived on land that they owned. This led to them scattering around the globe and building their own places of power. One of them settled in the Suicide Slum neighborhood of Metropolis and developed the local gangs into a syndicate under their control, which was also dubbed the 100. This Metropolis gang came to be run by a man named Tobias Whale.

The character of Inspector Henderson was first introduced into the 1940's Superman radio show, as a police man who was Superman's contact with the Metropolis Police Department. He was formally introduced into the comics in Action Comics #442 (December 1974)  and was created by Elliot S! Maggin and Curt Swan. Given the full name of William Henderson, the Inspector appeared in the original Black Lightning comics as a foil for Black Lightning, determined to bring the vigilante to justice when it appeared that Black Lightning had killed one of the criminals that he fought in his first major case. His opinion on the hero softened, however, when Black Lightning saved him from crime-boss Tobias Whale and Henderson determined that Black Lightning was innocent. Later comics depicted William Henderson as the Police Commissioner of Metropolis.

The TV series version of Inspector Henderson is described as a 23-year veteran of the Freeland Police Department. He is black whereas the Inspector Henderson in the comics was white. He appears to have a similarly adversarial relationship with Black Lightning as the series opens.

Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning first appeared in Black Lightning #1 (April 1977) and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. A former Gold-Medal winning decathlon star, Pierce went to college to become a teacher and returned home to the Metropolis neighborhood called Suicide Slum to teach at Garfield High - the inner-city high school he'd attended as a teenager. He ran afoul of a gang called The 100 after running a drug dealer out of his school with the aid of a star athlete pupil. Later that night, the 100 killed the pupil as a message to Pierce.  Pierce got the message, and elected to deliver one of his own. Donning a costume made by his foster father, a local tailor named Peter Gambi, Jefferson began fighting The 100 and everyone else who threatened his school as Black Lightning.

Historically, Black Lightning was an important character in several respects. He was the first black superhero to headline his own series at DC Comics. He was also, by design, the first black superhero born of a professional background. Isabella had a hand in developing other black heroes at Marvel Comics and noted, with dismay, that the only black characters children had to look up to in superhero books were either African royalty (ala Black Panther, Storm) or street-wise characters inspired by Blaxploitation movies (Misty Knight, Luke Cage, The Falcon) with nothing in between.

In the original comics, Jefferson Pierce was an ordinary human albeit one in peak physical condition due to his training as a Gold Medal-wining Olympic decathlon star rather than a meta-human. His powers originally came from a special belt, which generated an electric force-field that deflected bullets and allowed Jefferson to run a charge through metal objects by touching them. The belt was later determined to have activated Jefferson's metagene, which gave him full electrical generation and manipulation powers. Later retcons eliminated the belt and had Jefferson always having been a metahuman with electric powers.

We find out that Jefferson Pierce is the principal of Garfield High School in Freeland. In the original Black Lighting comics, Jefferson Pierce was a teacher at Garfield High School.

The TV series version of Jefferson Pierce is also a former Olympic Gold winner. We are not told what sport he won it for, however.

Anissa Pierce first appeared in Outsiders #1 (August 2003) and was created by Judd Winick and Tom Raney. The never-before-mentioned eldest daughter of Jefferson Pierce, she was a metahuman with the power to control the density of her body. This made her super-strong and invulnerable and also allowed her to create sonic waves by stomping the ground. This led to her superhero codename, Thunder. She made a deal with her father, who did not want her following in his footsteps, that she could become a superhero, if she wanted, after she graduated from college. She donned her first costume and went on her first patrol the night of her gradation.

The TV series version of Anissa Pierce is said to be a medical school student who teaches health studies three days a week at Garfield High. In the original comics, Anissa Pierce was a fully qualified medical doctor. At the end of the episode, she is depicted as having the super-strength of her comic-book counterpart, accidentally breaking a ceramic sink while having a panic attack thinking about the events of the past few days.

Jennifer Pierce first appeared in Justice Society of America #12 (March 2008) and was created by Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham, though her look was based on a character from the 1997 mini-series Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, who was said to be a future daughter of Black Lightning. The youngest daughter of Jefferson Pierce, she inherited her father's powers to manipulate electricity. Wishing to avoid the mistakes that he made with Anissa, Jefferson placed Jennifer in the care of the Justice Society of America, trusting them to oversee his daughter's training in controlling her powers. She took the code-name Lightning, despite being fearful of her sister's reaction.

The TV series version of Jennifer Pierce is still in high-school. She is said to be an outstanding scholar-athlete, much like her father.

Until Outsiders #1, it had never been suggested in any story that Jefferson Pierce had children. The idea did not please Black Lightning creator Tony Isabella, who maintained that a man of Jefferson Pierce's moral character would have tried to work things out with his wife for the sake of the children rather than seek a divorce. Isabella also said that Jefferson Pierce would never have taken up the life of a vigilante in the first place if there was any chance he'd leave orphans behind.

This was one of many clashes Tony Isabella would have with writer Judd Winick, who also introduced Black Lightning's niece into a Green Arrow storyline despite Jefferson Pierce having been an only child! Winick also depicted Jefferson Pierce using his powers to commit an act of cold-blooded murder, striking down the corrupt executive responsible for killing his niece with a freak lightning bolt at the end of the same storyline, despite Jefferson Pierce being a man of such strict moral character that he retired from crime-fighting when he thought he could no longer use his powers safely. The story was later retconned so that while Jefferson did strike the man, the bolt he used was non-lethal but his death was facilitated by Deathstroke, who just happened to be there and just happened to decide to mess with Black Lightning and make him think that he'd killed. For some reason.

Jennifer Pierce says that Thunder and Lightning were a witness to her father's rebirth as Black Lightning. In the comics, Anissa and Jennifer Pierce used the codenames Thunder and Lightning when they became superheroes.

Lady Eve first appeared in Batman And The Outsiders #24 (August 1985) and was created by Mike W. Barr and Alan Davis. A member of the Kobra cult, she served as the sinister cult-leader's lover and right-hand.

The TV series version of Lady Eve is introduced as Ms. Lady Eve and owner of the Black Bird Funeral Parlor.

In the original Tony Isabella Black Lightning comics, Lynn Stewart was Jefferson Pierce's ex-wife. This is also the case in the TV series, but the reason for their divorce is quite different.  In the comics, the two divorced long before Jefferson Pierce became Black Lightning. In the TV series, Lynn Stewart left Jefferson because of his life as Black Lightning.

Curiously, in the comics, Lynn Stewart figured out that Jefferson Pierce was Black Lightning but she approved of what he was doing rather than condemning it, as she does on the TV series.

Peter Gambi first appeared in Black Lightning #1 (April 1977) and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. A tailor who ran the store under the apartment in which Jefferson Pierce and his mother lived following the death of Jefferson's father, Gambi became a second father to a young Jefferson. When Jefferson sought help in finding a way to strike back at The 100 after the death of one of his students, it was Gambi who designed the Black Lightning costume for Jefferson and acquired his special power belt that was designed by associates of his brother.

Peter Gambi's brother, it should be noted, was Paul Gambi. In the comics, Paul Gambi was a tailor in Central City who designed costumes for super-villains as a side-business. The Rogues Gallery were his most frequent customers and treated Gambi like a member of their extended family, never telling the police who it was that provided them with the specialty clothing they often required.

In the comics, it was revealed that Peter Gambi was the trigger-man who accidentally killed Jefferson Pierce's father, Alvin, who ran a small grocery store. The incident scared him straight, and he opened his tailor shop and made Jefferson's mother a partner in his business as a means of atoning for his past crimes. He finally sacrificed himself to save Jefferson's life from an attack by the villain Syonide.

The TV series version of Peter Gambi is also a tailor and says that he thinks of Jefferson Pierce as a son, having known him since he was 12.

The TV series version of Alvin Pierce, Jefferson's father, is revealed to have been an investigative journalist. This was the background given to Alvin Pierce in the Black Lighting: Year One mini-series. Jefferson says that his father was killed by the gangster Tobias Whale, literally having an article about Whale's crimes shoved down his throat until he died.

Tobias Whale first appeared in Black Lightning #1 (April 1977) and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. An albino African-American of considerable girth, Tobias Whale was often called "The Great White Whale" behind his back. As leader of the Metropolis branch of The 100, Whale was the closest thing Jefferson Pierce had to an arch-enemy and the two would fight many times over the years. He had no super-powers beyond heavily developed muscles.

The TV series version of Tobias Whale is a crime boss who leads The 100 and he is an albino. He has a miniature harpoon with which he shoots people he wishes to torture but not kill. He is not morbidly obese nor does he seem to have super-strength.

The costume we see Black Lighting wearing in the security camera footage on the news report where the shop owner talks about how Black Lighting saved his life appears to be based on the character's costume design in the animated Young Justice cartoon.

The new Black Lighting costume appears to be bullet-proof.

Though not identified by name in this episode, the two minions of Tobias Whale who pick up Lala are Synoide and Joey Toledo.

In Black Lighting #1, Joey Toledo was the operative with The 100 who was responsible for killing one of Jefferson Pierce's students, inspiring him to become Black Lightning.

The name Syonide was used by three confirmed different villains. It is possible there was a fourth Syonide as well, but we'll get to that.

The first Synoide appeared in Black Lightning #3 (July 1977) and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. A master hunter and brewer of poisons, he was hired by Tobias Whale to capture Black Lightning. He succeeded but balked upon learning that he was expected to kill the hero as well. Fearful of opposing the will of The 100, he attempted to do the job using a gun that poisoned him as he fired that shot that would kill Black Lightining - a shot that was taken by Peter Gambi instead in Black Lightning #7 (November 1977).

The second Syonide was created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo and first appeared in Batman And The Outsiders #19 (March 1985) This Syonide was a woman and every bit the vicious killer the first one wasn't. Given the equipment of the original Syonide, which included a special gun that shot poisoned bullets or stun rounds and an electrified whip, she worked for Tobias Whale as a bodyguard and assassin. Her real name was never given.

The third Syonide was a woman named Nikki, who first appeared in Outsiders #16 (March 1995) and was created by Mike W. Barr and Paul Pelletier. She was part of the all-female Strike Force Kobra, run by Lady Eve. She was depicted as the lover of Fauna Faust - the sorceress daughter of JLA baddie Felix Faust. This Syonide died in the same issue where she made her first appearance, seemingly strangled with her own whip by The Eradicator.

Curiously, a woman called Syonide was seen in Action Comics #817 (September 2004) among the many villains trying to take down a weakened Supeman. This Syonide wore the leotard-style costume of the second Syonide but had the shorter hair of the third Syonide. It is possible, but was never confirmed, that this was a fourth Syonide.

Strangely enough, a version of Syonide who seemed to be the third one appeared in Firestorm #17 (November 2005) as part of a team including Black Adam, Queen Bee, The Royal Flush Gang and The Parasite. She is addressed as Nikki at one point, but no explanation is given for her apparent survival. It seems likely that her girlfriend may have resurrected her somehow, but this was never officially explained and she never appeared again after this story.

It is too soon to say which version of Syonide the TV series version is most closely modeled on.

Technobabble

We see that Black Lightning has the power to drain electricity from nearby electrical objects, killing a police car's battery and disrupting the power at Club 100, knocking out most of the dance-floor lights and the sound system while causing the safety lights to flicker.

We also see Black Lightning shoot lighting bolts and add an electric charge to his punches.

Black Lightning is immune to the effects of tasers. He can absorb the electrical charge from one and redirect it back to the person holding the taser.

Black Lightning is capable of discharging enough static electricity to make a car explode.

Black Lighting is capable of lifting a human body electromagnetically. We see him do this as he is questioning Will on the whereabouts of Lala.

Dialogue Triumphs

Jennifer: This was the night, in the rain, with Thunder and Lightning as a witness, that Black Lightning was born again.

Kiesha: Ain't nobody got time to be waiting on the Queen of Garfield High.
Jennifer: Kiesha, stop calling me that.
Kiesha: What?! Girl, embrace it! It's true!
Jennifer: Yeah, but when people say it they're just low-key hating on me for something I can't control. Like, my dad's the principal. I get it!

Henderson: You should start a church, Jefferson. At least you would make more money.

Lynn: Heard your daughter got arrested tonight. It's not a good look, Jeff.
Jefferson: My daughter? Oh, you're funny. Yeah, we have joint-custody, which means half of her attitude is your responsibility.
Lynn: Jeff, Anissa has not been in "our custody" for quite some time now. Now, I know it's hard for you to swallow but she's not a child anymore. She's a grown woman.
Jefferson: Yeah, legally true. But emotionally and financially, she is still in my care. And always in my wallet.

Peter: Do you remember why you became Black Lighting? You wanted to give the people hope. You wanted the evil that's out there to have something to fear. Right now there's nothing to fear and evil's running rampant like a plague through this city... hell, through this world!
Jefferson: Okay. You know what? Let's cut through the poetry and just talk real. Now, the purpose of Black Lightning was to kill Tobias for literally shoving my father's article down his throat until he died. Then it was because of crime bosses! Crooked politicians! Every small-time street-thug that had snatched a purse or robbed a store! You see, there's no end, Gambi! There's no bottom for Black Lightning... and the only loser in all of it is me!

Store Owner: When you're staring down the barrel of a gun, you don't care if the person saving you is a Christian, Muslim, Jew, black or white or some guy in a weird Parliament Funkdaelic get-up. You just want to be saved!

(Black Lighting approaches the motel room as Will emerges, holding Anissa and Jennifer at gun point. There is a momentary pause as they regard each other.)
Will: Nice suit.
(Will shoots Black Lightning. The bullet catches in the material of his costume. He picks it up and regards it before looking at Will.)
Black Lightning: Now you should at least give a brother a moment to say something heroically clever. Now you've just pissed me off.

Continuity

Inspector Henderson is described as a 23-year veteran of the Freeland Police Department, who came up through the ranks fighting Black Lightning.

As the series opens, Black Lightning has not been seen for nine years.

Anissa Pierce is arrested for civil disobedience after attending a protest of The 100 gang that turned violent. She is politically active and criticizes her father for not being more involved in the community outside of his job.

Jennifer Pierce is a star track athlete and scholar, though she longs to get out from under her controlling father's thumb.

Jefferson Pierce is pulled over on suspicion of being the suspect of a liquor store robbery, despite wearing a suit and tie. This is, he notes, the third time in the past month he'd been pulled over.

Jefferson Pierce has a friendly relationship with Inspector Henderson in his secret identity. Henderson promises to look into the cops who pulled him over and used his influence to get Anissa released early.

Club 100 is a Freeland club frequented by gang members. It is run by a man called Lala, who is part of The 100.

The 100 run a brothel through a motel called The Seahorse Motel.

Jefferson Pierce has been principal of Garfield High for seven years. They have not had one incident of violence in all that time and have a 90% graduation rate.

Jefferson Pierce had approached various gang leaders in Freeland about keeping the peace around the school. That apparently comes to an end when he approaches Lala about keeping his man Will (who is his cousin) away from his daughters after Will shows up at the school trying to hook-up with Jennifer.

Lala's real name is Latavious. He was one of Jefferson Pierce's students.

Lala has been running his territory for The 100 for five years.

Lala has a tween-age boy named Malik, who works for him as a drug dealer

At the end of the episode, Annisa Pierce breaks a sink with her bare hands.

The Fridge Factor

Jennifer's sneaking out to go to a club that is a popular gang hang-out spurs her father into action to save her. This, coupled with Annisa and Jennifer being taken hostage by The 100, leads to his becoming Black Lighting again.

The Winick Factor

Jefferson uses a criminal as a human shield to block the gunfire of another 100 member. While this isn't quite the same as shooting them himself, it's still something hard to imagine the classic Black Lightning doing.

The idea of Jefferson Pierce trying to balance being a vigilante when he has kids at home flies in the face of everything Tony Isabella's take on the character preached about personal responsibility.

The Bottom Line

Shockingly good, pun very much intended. Overall, this is a solid pilot episode that does a fantastic job of drawing upon the various conflicting mythologies of the character to build something solid for modern audiences. Though the purist in me rankles on a few points here and there, as a comic fan I found it most entertaining and plan to keep watching it.
